Ceiling spray foam insulation in Westlock is what we do when there is no attic to work in. With most of the local housing built before 1991, this town has a lot of ceilings that are not the underside of a ventilated attic: cathedral living rooms added in the seventies, flat and low-slope additions tacked onto the back of a bungalow, and additions whose roof structure ties into the original at an angle nobody can crawl through.

A ceiling with no space above it is a different assembly

An attic ceiling and a vaulted ceiling only look alike from inside the room. An attic has a large ventilated volume above it, so a modest amount of leakage gets diluted and carried away. A vaulted ceiling has a two-by-ten cavity, sheathing on top and shingles on top of that, with at best a narrow air channel. Any moisture that gets into that cavity has almost nowhere to go, and the amount of insulation that fits is fixed by the depth of the framing rather than by how deep you would like it.

Why the snowpack makes this worse here

North of Edmonton the snow that falls in November sits on the roof until spring, because there is no chinook to take it off mid-season. Snow on a roof is insulation, so the sheathing above an under-insulated vaulted cavity runs warmer and wetter than it would in a windswept climate, and it stays that way for months with no dry spell. Vented cathedral assemblies that work acceptably further south under-perform here for exactly that reason, and the assemblies that cause trouble are the ones with a vent channel that was blocked by batt the day it was built.

Spraying the cavity from below

On a retrofit the practical route is to take the finished surface off inside, spray closed-cell against the underside of the sheathing, and reboard. Done at sufficient depth that becomes a deliberately unvented assembly: the foam adheres to the deck so there is no gap for air to carry moisture into, and at roughly two inches closed-cell is its own vapour retarder. The depth of the rafter then sets how much R is available, and if that is not enough the honest answer is to furr the ceiling down a little rather than to pretend thinner foam does more than it does.

Flat roofs on additions

The low-slope addition at the back of an older house is its own category. Those roofs were often built with almost no slope, a thin cavity and a ceiling plane full of pot lights added later, and they are where we find frost in the fabric. Sealing every penetration through that ceiling matters more than the inch of extra depth, because what pushed water into the cavity was air carrying it, not conduction.

Ceiling Spray Foam Insulation Westlock: Common Questions

Can a vaulted ceiling be insulated without opening it? Not reliably. There is no access, and filling a shallow cavity blind is how vent channels get blocked. Opening it is the part that lets anyone see what is really in there.

Is an unvented roof assembly acceptable? Yes, when it is built as one on purpose with enough adhered foam against the deck. The failures are the vented assemblies that were accidentally sealed, not the sealed ones that were designed.

Our flat addition has stains on the ceiling every spring. That is usually frost that accumulated in the cavity through a winter with no thaw, melting when the weather turns. It reads like a roof leak and is not one.

How much does ceiling spray foam insulation cost in Westlock? It prices per board foot of sprayed area at the depth the cavity allows, with removal and reboarding of the finished surface as separate items. On a vaulted ceiling those two items are a real part of the job.

How do I choose a ceiling spray foam contractor in Westlock? Ask what they intend to do about ventilation in the cavity, and get the answer before anything is opened. Half-vented is the one outcome to avoid.
