Lethbridge is one of the windiest cities in Canada, and wind is not a comfort problem. It is a pressure problem. Sustained wind against a wall drives air through every unsealed joint in the assembly, and an insulation that only slows heat does nothing about it. That is the specific argument for closed-cell foam here, and it is a different argument from the one that applies in a sheltered city.

Air tightness is the product, insulation is the by-product

Under Alberta's section 9.25, spray foam counts toward the building's air barrier system when it is applied continuously and sealed at every edge. On a windy site that is the clause that matters. A wall can carry a respectable R-value on paper and still lose heat all winter because wind is pushing air through it; sealing the assembly removes the mechanism rather than resisting it. Closed-cell also adds rigidity to the structure it is bonded to, which is a genuine secondary benefit under repeated wind loading rather than a headline reason to buy.

The stock this applies to

About 59 percent of Lethbridge homes were built before 1991, which is among the higher shares in the province. Those houses were not built to current air-sealing expectations, and in a wind climate the gap between how they were built and how they perform is wider than the same house would show in a calmer town. West-facing walls, rim joists and attic ceiling planes are where that shows up first.

Where the density earns its price

At roughly 2 lb per cubic foot, closed-cell carries R-6 to R-7 per inch and becomes a vapour retarder at about 38 mm. That combination is what makes it the material for exposed and below-grade assemblies: basement walls, crawl spaces, rim joists, and any cavity too shallow to reach the target number with a lower-density product. Newer areas like Riverstone, Copperwood, Garry Station and The Crossings sit alongside much older stock, so the right answer varies street by street rather than by postcode. On the commercial side, Sherring and Churchill Industrial carry the steel buildings where foam is bonded straight to the panel to take away the condensing surface.

What the job has to meet

CAN/ULC-S705.1 for the material, CAN/ULC-S705.2 for installation by a certified installer, and a thermal barrier over the foam anywhere it faces occupied space - 12.7 mm drywall or an approved intumescent coating. Attics and crawl spaces entered only for service may use an ignition barrier instead. Foam is rated on long-term thermal resistance, so the figure quoted is one the assembly should still be holding years later.

Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation Lethbridge: Common Questions

What does closed cell do about wind? It seals. Under section 9.25 foam counts toward the air barrier when applied continuously and sealed at the edges, and on a windy site that is where most of the benefit sits.

Is my older house a good candidate? About 59 percent of Lethbridge homes predate 1991, and those were not built to current air-sealing expectations. West-facing walls and rim joists show it first.

Does the rigidity matter here? Under repeated wind loading it is a real, if secondary, benefit. The reason to buy it is still the air seal and the moisture resistance.
