Calgary does not get one winter. It gets forty of them, because a chinook can lift the temperature twenty degrees in an afternoon and drop it again overnight. Every one of those swings pushes air, and with it moisture, through the wall assembly. That is the specific reason closed-cell foam earns its price here: at 2 lb density it is not only insulation at R-6 to R-7 per inch, it stops the air movement that carries the moisture in the first place. Closed cell spray foam insulation in Calgary is specified for exactly that instability.

Why the vapour retarder matters more than the R-value here

Under Alberta code, section 9.25 treats spray foam as part of the building's air barrier when it is applied to a continuous depth and sealed at every edge. Closed-cell becomes a vapour retarder at about 38 mm - roughly an inch and a half. On a Calgary retrofit that single fact changes the job: the assembly no longer needs a separate polyethylene sheet, and you stop trying to make poly airtight around every pot light, top plate and bathroom fan in a house that was never built for it. With more than half of Calgary homes - about 52 percent - built before 1991, that is the majority of the housing stock.

The three Calgary assemblies that keep coming back

  • Bonus rooms over the garage. The floor sits above unconditioned space and the room never holds heat. Closed-cell under that floor and at the rim gives an air seal and a vapour retarder in one pass, in a cavity too shallow to reach the same number any other way.
  • Cantilevered floors. Same physics, worse access. The overhang is exposed on five sides and fibrous insulation there is usually a formality rather than a barrier.
  • Basement and below-grade walls. Closed-cell resists water rather than absorbing it, which is why it is the material specified against foundation concrete instead of an interior batt that will eventually meet a damp wall.

What a Calgary job has to satisfy

Medium-density foam must meet CAN/ULC-S705.1 as a material, and installation is governed by CAN/ULC-S705.2, which requires a certified installer. In occupied space the foam has to be covered by a thermal barrier - most often 12.7 mm drywall - or an approved intumescent coating. In an attic or crawl space reached only for service, an ignition barrier can be used instead. Getting that specification right at quote stage is what separates a job that passes inspection from one that gets opened up again.

Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation Calgary: Common Questions

Where does closed cell earn its cost in Calgary? Anywhere the assembly meets weather or ground: basement walls, rim joists, bonus room floors and cantilevers. It resists moisture rather than absorbing it, and at about 38 mm it becomes a vapour retarder in its own right.

Does it replace the poly vapour barrier? Under Alberta section 9.25 it can. That matters most in older stock, where making a polyethylene sheet airtight around every penetration was never realistic.

Is it worth it in the attic? Often not. Where headroom exists, the same R-38 comes from about eleven inches of the lighter foam for less money. Density buys you performance in a shallow cavity, not in an open attic.

Closed-cell is not automatically the right answer. It costs more than open-cell and in an interior partition wall the softer, vapour-permeable option is usually the better buy. Where it wins in Calgary is anywhere the assembly is exposed to the outside, below grade, or too shallow to reach code any other way.
