Garage spray foam insulation in Redcliff is mostly detached-garage work. The old townsite is laid out with lanes, so the garage sits at the back of the lot facing the alley rather than attached to the front of the house, and with about 62% of local homes built before 1991 a lot of those garages are as old as the houses. A detached garage is a free-standing building with six exposed surfaces and no borrowed heat from anywhere, which is a harder brief than an attached garage and a more rewarding one to get right.

Say what the building is for

A garage that parks a vehicle and nothing else needs very little. A garage that someone works in through a southeast Alberta winter is a small shop, and in a town full of trades serving the greenhouses and the fabrication yards there are a lot of them. The two have different answers, and the difference is not the amount of insulation but whether the building is being sealed as an envelope at all.

If it is a workshop, three things decide the outcome: the ceiling, the overhead door, and the slab perimeter. Insulation in the walls matters least of the four, which surprises people.

The ceiling and the roof above it

Heat goes up, and in a detached garage with an open truss roof there is nothing to stop it. Spraying the ceiling plane and sealing it, or spraying the underside of the roof deck and bringing the attic inside, both work. What does not work is batt laid over an open ceiling grid with gaps at every truss, which is the usual find. If the roof space is used for storage, the ceiling plane is the better choice; if it is not, the deck is simpler and avoids the ventilation argument.

The door is the hole you cannot foam

An overhead door is a large, thin, poorly sealed panel and nothing sprayed anywhere else changes that. What can be fixed is the perimeter: the jamb seals, the bottom weatherstrip, and especially the header above the door, which on an older garage is an open framed cavity with daylight in it. Foaming that header and the jambs around the opening is a small item with a disproportionate effect, and it is the one people never ask for.

The slab and the bottom of the wall

A garage slab was poured on grade with no edge insulation, and the bottom plate of the wall often sits on it with nothing between. Air comes in under that plate along the whole perimeter, and the first six inches of wall is in contact with concrete that is in contact with the ground. Closed-cell applied along that junction closes the air path, and because it is unaffected by water it is the right material to have at floor level in a building where snow comes in on a vehicle.

Masonry garages

Some of the older garages in town are concrete block rather than framed. There is no cavity, so the work is interior application direct to the block face, which closed-cell handles well, and then a covering over it where the space is occupied for work.

Garage Spray Foam Insulation Redcliff: Common Questions

We have a detached garage. Is it worth insulating? If you work in it, yes, and the ceiling is the place to start. If it only parks a car, the honest answer is that the money does more elsewhere on the property.

Can anything be done about the overhead door? Not the door itself, but the header above it and the jambs around it are frequently wide open, and sealing them makes a noticeable difference.

The walls are concrete block. Does foam work on that? Well. It bonds directly to the block, which gives a continuous air seal that no cut-to-fit product manages on a masonry surface.

How much does garage spray foam insulation cost in Redcliff? Priced per board foot of sprayed area, so the number follows wall and ceiling area and the depth chosen. A ceiling-and-perimeter job on a detached garage is the small version; a full six-surface shop envelope is the large one.

How do I choose a garage spray foam contractor in Redcliff? Tell them what you do in the building and see whether the quote changes. A garage used as a shop and a garage used for parking should not get the same scope.
