Spray foam insulation for new construction in Vermilion covers acreage and infill houses, farm buildings going up on established yards, and additions and new facilities on the institutional and campus side. New work is easier than retrofit in every respect except one: it has to be coordinated. Foam has exactly one slot in the schedule, and getting into it late or early costs more than the material.

The slot in the schedule

Foam goes in after framing, sheathing, roofing and rough-in of mechanical, electrical and plumbing, and before any interior finishing. Everything that penetrates the envelope has to be in place, because a hole cut afterwards is a hole through the air barrier that somebody then has to remember to seal. If the foam goes in before the rough-ins are complete, every trade that follows cuts into it. If it goes in after boarding has started, it does not go in at all. Booking it as a date is less useful than booking it as a position in the sequence.

Foam decides the vapour strategy, so it has to be decided early

Closed-cell at roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch becomes a vapour barrier at about two inches, so where it is used at that thickness the assembly has its vapour control built in and a separate poly layer is not just unnecessary, it can be harmful because it creates a second, interior vapour retarder with the assembly trapped between them. Open-cell at about R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch is vapour-permeable and requires a vapour retarder on the warm side. Those are two different wall designs, and the decision belongs with the designer before framing, not with whoever is holding the gun.

Hybrid assemblies and why they are common here

The usual Alberta new-build compromise is a hybrid: a controlled thickness of closed-cell against the sheathing to provide the air seal, the vapour control and enough thermal resistance to keep the sheathing above the dew point, then a fibrous insulation filling the rest of the cavity. That gets the performance where it matters per dollar, and the critical number is the ratio between the foam and the fill, because too little foam leaves the sheathing cold enough to condense on. It is a calculation, not a rule of thumb, and it depends on the design temperature, which here is a cold one.

Deep frost argues for the slab

East-central Alberta gets sustained cold without chinook interruption, so the ground under a new building freezes deep and stays frozen. Under-slab and slab-edge insulation is cheap during construction and effectively impossible afterwards, which makes it the single best decision available on a new build in this district, especially for a shop or a house with in-floor heat. It is also the item that gets value-engineered out first, and the only one that can never be revisited.

Raised heels, and designing out the eave problem

Older houses here taper to nothing at the eave because the rafter sits on the top plate. A new roof designed with a raised heel truss gives full insulation depth right out over the exterior wall, which removes the cold band and most of the ice-damming mechanism before the building exists. It costs almost nothing at design stage.

Institutional new builds and the inspected assembly

On campus and public work the assembly is drawn, specified, inspected and recorded, and the thermal barrier over the foam in occupied spaces is part of it. That means a submittal and a sequence we work to rather than around, and it suits foam well because the assembly is defined before anyone is on site.

Spray Foam Insulation New Construction Vermilion: Common Questions

When does foam go in? After framing, sheathing, roofing and all rough-ins, and before any interior finishing. It is a position in the sequence rather than a date.

Do we still need poly? Not where closed-cell is used at vapour-barrier thickness, and adding it can trap the assembly between two retarders. With open-cell, yes.

What is a hybrid wall? Closed-cell against the sheathing for air and vapour control, fibrous fill for the rest of the cavity. The ratio between them is calculated for the design temperature.

How much does spray foam insulation for new construction cost in Vermilion? Priced per board foot of sprayed area, so area and thickness set the base. On new work access is good, so the number is more predictable than on a retrofit.

How do I choose a new construction spray foam contractor in Vermilion? Ask when in the sequence they expect to be on site and what vapour strategy their quote assumes. Those two answers tell you whether they have read the drawings.
