Spray foam roofing is a different product from spray foam insulation, and conflating the two is the most common misunderstanding we have to clear up.

What SPF roofing actually is

An insulation job is applied to the underside of a deck, inside the building. SPF roofing is applied on top of the roof, as the roof - a continuous layer of closed-cell foam with a protective coating over it.

That distinction matters because it changes what the system does. It is simultaneously the insulation, the air barrier, and the waterproofing, with no seams.

Seams are where conventional low-slope roofs fail. A monolithic surface removes that failure mode, which is the core argument for the system.

The recover case

The strongest use in Edmonton is recovering an existing low-slope roof that is near end of life but structurally sound.

Rather than tearing off and disposing of the existing membrane, SPF can often be applied over a properly prepared surface - which avoids the tear-off cost, the landfill volume, and the period where the building is open to weather.

That last point matters more here than in a milder climate. A tear-off is a weather-window job, and Edmonton's window is short.

"Often" is doing real work in that sentence. Whether a recover is appropriate depends on what is already up there, how much moisture is trapped in the existing assembly, and the condition of the deck. A wet existing roof must not be recovered - you would be sealing water in. That requires a survey, not an estimate.

Ponding and the slope question

Low-slope roofs in this climate accumulate snow, and meltwater has to go somewhere. Because SPF is applied as a fluid, it can be built up to correct minor drainage problems and improve fall toward drains - a genuine advantage over a sheet system, which follows whatever slope is already there.

It is not a licence to fix a badly drained roof with foam. Standing water is a design problem first.

Coating is not optional

The foam itself is not UV stable. The protective coating is what makes the system durable, and it is a maintenance item with a service interval - recoating extends the life rather than replacing the roof.

Anyone quoting SPF roofing should be explicit about the coating specification and the expected recoat cycle. If that is vague, so is the warranty.

Freeze-thaw and the Edmonton winter

Sustained cold with a long snow load, then a thaw. A monolithic surface with no seams handles that cycle better than a system with laps to open - but the coating and the detailing at penetrations and edges are where attention is needed.
