Attic spray foam insulation in Banff is almost always a response to one symptom: a ridge of ice along the eave, icicles the length of a window, and water appearing on a ceiling in February. Owners reach for gutters and roof rakes. The ice is a message from the attic, and the attic is where it gets fixed.

How the ice gets there

Snow lands in November and stays. Underneath it, heat leaking up through the ceiling warms the roof deck above the heated part of the house, and the bottom of the snowpack melts. That water runs down the deck under the snow until it reaches the eave, which overhangs unheated air, where it refreezes. The dam grows, the next meltwater backs up behind it, and eventually it is standing against the underside of the shingles with nowhere to go but inward.

Why depth alone does not stop it

Adding another layer of loose fill reduces how fast heat moves through the material. It does nothing about heat carried by air escaping through the ceiling, and that is the larger part on an older house: around the plumbing stack, the bathroom fan housing, the top plates of interior walls, recessed light cans, and the attic hatch. All of those are open holes between a warm house and a cold attic. New insulation laid on top of a hole does not close it.

The roof deck has to stay cold

That is the whole objective. Once the ceiling plane below is genuinely sealed, the deck sits at outdoor temperature, the snowpack above it does not melt from below, and there is nothing to refreeze at the eave. In a vented attic that means sealing every penetration and keeping the soffit path to the ridge clear so the cold air can wash the deck. Blocking the soffits with insulation is one of the most common faults we find here, and it causes the exact problem the insulation was bought to solve.

The hatch and the chase

Two items repay attention out of proportion to their size. The hatch is a lid over a hole, usually with no insulation on its back and no gasket at its frame, and in a tight house it can be the single biggest opening in the ceiling. The other is any chase a renovation left open: a duct run or a dropped soffit that connects the attic to a wall cavity, so warm air is fed up into the attic from inside the walls.

Where closed-cell belongs instead

Some roofs here have no attic to work in at all, because the ceiling follows the rafters. Those cannot be vented and have to be treated as a sealed assembly, with closed-cell foam applied directly to the underside of the deck at a depth that keeps the dew point inside the foam. That is a different job from a vented attic and it should be quoted as one.

We take care of the work

Attic Spray Foam Insulation Banff: Common Questions

We get ice along the eave every winter. Is that the roof? It is the ceiling below it. Heat escaping into the attic melts the underside of the snowpack, and the water refreezes where the roof overhangs cold air.

Our attic is already full of insulation. Then depth is not the shortage. The penetrations through the ceiling are what is losing the heat, and new material sits above them.

Should the soffit vents be insulated over? No. Blocking them stops the cold air that keeps the deck cold, which makes ice damming worse rather than better.

How much does attic spray foam insulation cost in Banff? The sealing work is priced per board foot over a small area and is modest; any blown depth on top is separate. On this stock the sealing is where the result comes from.

How do I get an attic spray foam insulation quote in Banff? Say whether you have had ice at the eave or water on a ceiling, and whether there is a walkable attic or a sloped ceiling. That decides which of two jobs we are quoting.
