Camper van spray foam insulation in Edmonton is usually specified by somebody who intends to use the van in cold weather rather than store it through the winter. That intention changes the whole build, because a van that only ever sees summer can get away with a great deal that a van used in February cannot.

A van used through the winter, not parked for it

Anybody sleeping in a van at Edmonton temperatures is dealing with a small volume of air, a large area of thin metal, and a continuous source of moisture in the form of a person breathing. Without a continuous seal that moisture goes straight to the steel and condenses there, and it does it every night. The difference between a van that is pleasant at minus twenty and one that is streaming with water is almost entirely whether the metal is covered continuously or only in the easy places.

The floor and the wheel arches

These are the two areas most often left out and the two that matter most in a cold climate. The floor sits directly over the road with air moving underneath it at speed, and the wheel arches are complex shapes that no rigid product fits. Both are straightforward to spray and both are where the cold comes up into a build that otherwise looks finished. It is worth confirming they are in the scope rather than assuming.

Windows and roof vents are holes in a very small envelope

In a house a window is a small fraction of a wall. In a van it is a substantial fraction of the whole envelope, and so is a roof vent. The insulation cannot fix the opening itself, but sealing carefully around each one is what stops the surrounding metal becoming a condensation ring. That detail work is a real part of the job rather than a finishing touch.

What to do about the cab

The cab is not part of the insulated shell and generally cannot be, because of the glass and the mechanical penetrations. The practical approach is to treat the bulkhead between the cab and the living space as an exterior surface and to plan a curtain or partition, rather than trying to insulate a space that has a windscreen in it.

Camper Van Spray Foam Insulation Edmonton: Common Questions

Can a van be used through an Edmonton winter? It can, and it needs a continuous seal to do it. The moisture from sleeping in a small metal space has to be stopped from reaching the steel.

Do the floor and wheel arches get done? They should, and they are the two most commonly left out. Both are where cold comes into an otherwise finished build.

What happens with the cab? It is treated as outside the insulated space. The bulkhead behind it becomes the surface that matters, with a curtain or partition planned.
