Warehouse spray foam insulation in Vegreville is work on the buildings that serve a farming district: ag supply and chemical stores, seed handling, parts warehouses behind equipment dealers, and trucking and distribution sheds. They are tall clear-span steel buildings with big doors, and they share a problem that smaller buildings do not have. The heat is all at the ceiling and the product is all on the floor.

Stratification is the warehouse problem

Warm air rises, and in a building with twenty or thirty feet of clear height it keeps rising until it reaches the roof, where it sits in a layer against the coldest surface in the building. The thermostat on a wall reads the air at head height and calls for more heat while the top of the building is already far warmer than anyone needs. Two things follow. The heating bill is paying to warm a part of the building nobody occupies, and the loss through the roof is driven by the temperature of that ceiling layer rather than by the temperature anybody measures. Insulating the roof plane is therefore worth disproportionately more in a tall building than the area alone suggests, which is the opposite of the intuition that walls come first.

The roof is also where the condensation lands

That warm layer at the ceiling carries whatever moisture the building has, from forklift exhaust, from washing, from the doors opening, and from product. It meets the underside of an uninsulated steel deck, and in this district that deck is well below freezing for months at a stretch with no thaw to clear it. The water freezes to the steel, accumulates all winter and comes down in the first mild spell, over whatever is stored beneath. Operators report a roof leak. The roof is intact.

Why foam suits a clear-span steel shell

A pre-engineered building's purlins and girts bridge straight through any blanket insulation, and the sheet screws through it, so the blanket is squeezed to nothing at every member and the installed performance is well short of the specification. Closed-cell foam sprayed to the inside of the sheet is at full thickness over the steel as well as between it, bonds to the deck so there is no gap to ventilate, becomes a vapour barrier at about two inches, and seals every lap and fastener line in the same pass. At roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch it does that without taking meaningful clear height out of a building where racking height is the asset.

Dock doors, the base angle and an open site

Whatever is done to the shell, the openings govern the result. A dock or drive-through door is a large share of one elevation, and in a building that cycles doors all day the air exchange through them is substantial. Below that, the joint where the cladding meets the base angle and the slab leaks continuously, and on a site in open parkland with fields running up to the yard the wind pressurises one elevation and puts the other under suction, driving air through the building rather than letting it drift. Sealing the base and sorting out the door seals is where a warehouse job earns its keep.

What the product needs decides the target

A parts warehouse needs to be tolerable to work in. A seed or chemical store has temperature limits for the product that may be about staying above freezing rather than about comfort. Those are different targets with different thicknesses, and in a building that may have both uses in different bays, the boundary between them needs to be a real wall rather than a notional one. Tell us what is stored where before anybody specifies a thickness.

The covering, and working around operations

Foam is combustible and needs a covering over it in an occupied building, decided by the authority that inspects yours and priced with the insulation rather than afterwards. And a working warehouse cannot be emptied, so the practical approach is bay by bay around racking that can be cleared, which means your operations drive the schedule more than the building size does.

Warehouse Spray Foam Insulation Vegreville: Common Questions

Should we insulate the walls or the roof first? The roof, in a tall building. The warm air sits against it, so that is where the loss and the condensation both happen.

Water is dripping on the stock. Is the roof leaking? Usually it is condensation on the cold deck, accumulated over a winter with no thaw and released in the first warm spell.

Does the blanket insulation already up there count? Only partly. It is compressed to nothing at every purlin, which is why the purlin lines frost up and the real performance is below the specification.

How much does warehouse spray foam insulation cost in Vegreville? It is priced per board foot over the sprayed area, so the number follows roof and wall area and the thickness your stored product calls for, with removal of old blanket and the required covering as separate lines. Phasing around racking affects the schedule.

How do I choose a warehouse spray foam contractor in Vegreville? Ask them what they expect to happen to the air at the top of your building. Anyone treating a thirty-foot warehouse like a tall garage has not understood stratification.
