Most advice about home insulation is a list of products. The bottom of the loop
The gaps near the bottom are the rim joist - the band where the floor meets the foundation, running the full perimeter - and any crawl space. Both are small in area and both leak continuously. Closed-cell is the material here: it seals, it resists moisture rather than absorbing it, it gives R-6 to R-7 per inch, and at about 38 mm it becomes a vapour retarder in its own right under Alberta section 9.25.
What this means for what you buy
Once the loop is closed, additional R-value starts to actually pay, and at that point the cheaper product usually wins on depth-unlimited assemblies like a vented attic. Before the loop is closed, extra R-value is mostly decorative. That is the whole argument, and it is why an honest quote asks about draughts and cold floors rather than starting with a number of inches.
The one exception that is worth doing out of order
If a basement is being finished, do the walls while they are open. Below grade the material choice is not a preference - closed-cell resists water and open-cell absorbs it - and the wall will never be this accessible again.
Why "just add more insulation" is oversold
It is the advice everyone gives because it is easy to give, and in a leaky house it is close to useless. Insulation slows heat moving by conduction. It does nothing about heat leaving as moving air, and in most older houses the second is the larger number.
