About 76% of homes in Drumheller were built before 1991, one of the higher shares in Alberta, and the character of that stock is specific. The town grew around coal, with mining running from the boom that began after 1911 until coal lost its market following the Second World War, and much of the housing went up quickly for mining families in that period. Residential spray foam insulation in Drumheller is therefore retrofit work on small, heavily altered houses, spread along a valley, sitting on ground that does not hold still.

One town, thirteen communities, twenty-eight kilometres

Drumheller is not a single townsite. The town amalgamated with the Municipal District of Badlands in 1998 and now covers roughly 107 square kilometres, taking in Nacmine, Cambria, Lehigh, Rosedale, East Coulee and Wayne along with the earlier annexations, so it has absorbed at least thirteen communities in total. The Red Deer River valley it occupies is about two kilometres wide and twenty-eight kilometres long. That means a house in one hamlet and a house in another can be very different buildings from very different years, and it means we are quoting along a valley rather than across a grid.

The ground is the first thing to understand

The valley is cut into bentonitic shale and clay. Bentonite is an expansive soil: it swells as it takes on water, shrinks as it dries, and does so unevenly depending on where water lands and where the sun reaches. Differential foundation movement is a familiar condition on houses here. The practical consequences for insulation are two. First, water management comes before anything sprayed, because controlling moisture in the soil both protects the foundation and reduces the movement itself. Second, assemblies have to tolerate movement, which favours an adhered foam layer over anything mechanically fixed that depends on a constant gap.

Where the valley puts the cold

Cold air is denser than warm air, so on clear still nights it drains off the prairie above the valley, flows down the coulees and settles on the valley floor, staying there until the sun gets over the valley wall. A house on the bottom sits in the coldest air in the municipality for the last hours of the night. Houses on the benches and the rim trade that for wind, with nothing upwind to slow it down. This is semi-arid country with a very wide spread; the record high is 40.6 degrees Celsius from July 1941 and the record low is minus 43.9 from January 1996.

Why depth alone disappoints on this stock

On a 1920s or 1930s house the problem is almost never that there is too little insulation. It is that the house is full of openings: an uncapped balloon-framed wall running from the basement to the attic, a chimney chase from a dead coal or wood appliance, a crawl space with bare earth under it, a rim joist that was never sealed, and the dead pocket where each addition's roof met the original wall. Insulation slows conduction; it does nothing about air moving. Laying more material over those openings produces a bill and no change, and the owner reasonably concludes insulation does not work. It does. It was being asked to do the wrong job.

The order we would spend in

Rim joist first, because it is the leakiest accessible surface in nearly every house of this age and the cheapest thing to do properly. Then the crawl space or basement, with the ground sealed and the drainage sorted before any foam. Then the attic penetrations and the dead pockets over additions. Then the walls, when a finish is coming off anyway. Closed-cell gives roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch and acts as its own vapour retarder past about two inches; open-cell gives around R-3.5 per inch and suits interior and sound work. We quote the job, schedule it and stand behind it, and pricing follows the board feet sprayed against a target R-value, so a staged plan genuinely costs less than one bite.

Residential Spray Foam Insulation Drumheller: Common Questions

Where should we start on an older Drumheller house? The rim joist, almost always. It is the leakiest reachable surface in this stock and the least expensive item to do well.

Does the ground movement rule out insulating? No, but it decides the order. Water management comes first, and the insulation should be an adhered layer that moves with the structure.

We added insulation and nothing changed. Why? Because the loss was air moving through openings, not conduction through the ceiling. New material laid over a leak does not close it.

How much does residential spray foam insulation cost in Drumheller? It follows sprayed area and depth, so scope is the number. On this stock the condition of the house and whether finishes have to be removed usually matter more than the square footage.

How do I choose a residential spray foam contractor in Drumheller? Ask what they want to look at before quoting, and whether drainage and the crawl space are in scope. On a valley house here, a quote written from a phone description is a guess.
