Crawl space spray foam insulation in Wainwright is mostly work under additions, under older farm and acreage houses, and under the stepped-down back halves of town houses that were extended at some point in the last fifty years. The spaces are low, the access is through a hatch somebody built once and never used again, and the problem under them is nearly always the same.

A vent on open prairie is not a vent, it is an inlet

Crawl spaces of this era were built with vents in the perimeter on the theory that air exchange would keep the space dry. That theory assumes still air. On flat land with a sustained wind, the vents on the windward side are pressurised and the vents on the far side are under suction, so air is not exchanging gently, it is being pushed straight through the space from one side to the other. Whatever that air is carrying goes with it, and in winter that means the underside of your floor is being cooled by moving outdoor air rather than by still outdoor air, which is a much larger heat loss than anyone intended.

Batt in the floor joists loses this argument

The standard retrofit is insulation pushed up between the floor joists with the crawl space left open to the weather. Under a through-draught two things happen. The air moves through and around the batt, which strips much of its value, and the batt sags or falls out entirely once it has been damp a few times. We routinely crawl into spaces where half the insulation is lying on the ground sheet and the floor above is the coldest in the house.

Sealing the perimeter instead of the floor

The approach that works on this exposure is to stop treating the crawl space as outdoors. Closed-cell foam goes on the inside face of the perimeter wall and across the rim, the vents are closed, and the space is brought inside the building envelope with a sealed ground cover underneath. The floor above then sits over a space at close to room temperature rather than over moving outdoor air. Pipes in that space stop being a freeze risk, which on an acreage house with a long run to the kitchen matters more than the comfort gain.

The ground is a moisture source whether or not it looks wet

Soil gives off water vapour continuously. In a vented space the wind takes it away and nobody notices; in a sealed space it has to be stopped at the source, which is why a continuous sealed sheet on the dirt is part of the job and not an upgrade. Skip it and the space becomes humid, and humid air in contact with a cold rim is exactly the condition we were trying to remove.

What we look at first

Standing water, the condition of any existing ground cover, where the plumbing runs, and whether the perimeter is poured concrete, block, or preserved wood. A wood foundation changes the detail because the assembly has to be able to dry in one direction, and that is decided on site. If there is water in the crawl space, drainage is resolved before any foam is sprayed. We quote the job, schedule it and stand behind it, and that includes saying when the sequence has to start somewhere other than insulation.

Crawl Space Spray Foam Insulation Wainwright: Common Questions

Should the crawl space vents be closed? As part of a sealed, insulated crawl space with a ground cover, yes. On their own, no. Closing vents while leaving the space uninsulated and the dirt exposed traps moisture.

Why is the floor above so cold when there is insulation in the joists? Because wind is moving through the space and around the batt. Insulation slows conduction; it does not stop air, and on open prairie there is plenty of air to stop.

Will this help with frozen pipes? That is often the main reason to do it. Bringing the space inside the envelope keeps the pipe runs at indoor temperature instead of near-outdoor temperature.

How much does crawl space spray foam insulation cost in Wainwright? It follows the perimeter length, the rim, and the depth needed, with access as the variable nobody expects. A space with a small hatch and a low clearance takes longer than the same square footage in a walk-in basement.

How do I choose a crawl space spray foam contractor in Wainwright? Ask whether they intend to insulate the floor or the walls, and why. If the ground cover is not mentioned at all, the moisture half of the job has been left out.
